Racing Satellites

Two satellites are following the same orbit path, one is 1000 miles behind the other. If the front satellite is traveling at a speed of 17,000 miles per hour and the other satellite is traveling 17,500 miles per hour, how many miles will the front satellite travel before the second one catches up to it?

I believe that the front satellite will travel 34,000 miles before the second satelliter catches up to it because in one hour they will have both traveled 17,000 miles, but the back one will have traveled an additional 500 miles. So after 2 hours the back satelite will have traveled a total of 35,000 miles while the front satelite only traveled 34,000 miles, but sense there was a thousand mile gap between them, the back satellite would have caught up with the front satellite.

I agree with alex, it would take the second satilie two hours to catch the first. So, two times 17,000 miles equals 34,000 miles. The first satilite traveled 34,000 miles.

I agree with what Alex said that the front satellite will travel 34,000 miles. Another thing I wanted to talk to you about was that my computer wouldn't let me log in on the wiki math. At school when I tried to log in it said that I had the wrong password. I will talk to you about it tommorrow. Obviously I am not good with computers!:)

In one hour No.2 goes an additional 50o miles faster than No.1.So,it would take 2 hours for the back satellite to catch up with the front one. If No.2 one goes 35,0o0 miles in one hour,No. 1 only goes 34,o0o.

I think that the second satellite will catch up to the first satellite after it has traveled 34,000 miles (2 hours). The second one will have already traveled 35,000 miles, which makes up for the 1000 miles that it was behind.
