What does infinitely close mean?
In the last post we discussed .999..... We must remember that the 9's repeat infinitely...which means that they never end. Since the 9's repeat, the number .999... must be infinitely close to 1. If a number is infinitely close to another, can we distinguish between them?

Infinitely close means that a number such as .999... will infinitely become smaller, but it will never become 1, because as we have argued in class a number can always become smaller. Enabling .999... to become infinitely close to 1.

I believe that we cannot because it is like trying to tell the difference between two atoms using a magnifying glass, so I believe that we cannot distinguish between the two.

The .999 with a repeten bar over it means that it goes on for ever. Since it has a repreten bar over it the number does not change no matter what. You cant add to a repeting number, it means then it a irrational number.
Infinitely close means that a repeating decimal is so close to the next whole number that it can be counted as that number.You can not distinguish between them because you have know clue what size the repeating decimal really is.
I don't understand what you mean by
"...can we distinguish between them?"
Could you clarify on that?
Thanks,

I have the same question as Fareen.

Thanks Hans!

I agree with Hans

periods 2/3
9/23/08
x=0.999999
10x=9.99999
10x-x=9.999999-.99999=9
9x=9
x=1
Therefore .9999(repeating indefinitely)= 1
Infinitely close means touching. Many people will try to tell you otherwise but they are incorrect.
